Brianna Ghey court verdict: Mother won’t forgive killers as ‘twisted’ teens guilty of murder

CCTV footage shows Brianna Ghey on the bus to Culcheth on the day she was stabbed to death

Brianna Ghey's mother has said she will not forgive her daughter's killers as the “twisted” teenagers were found guilty of the 16-year-old's brutal murder.

Brianna, 16, was stabbed 28 times with a hunting knife to her head, neck, chest and back in Linear Park, Culcheth, a village near Warrington, Cheshire, on the afternoon of February 11.

After a four-week trial at Manchester Crown Court, the two accused teenagers, identified only as Girl X and Boy Y, both now 16 but 15 at the time, were convicted of murder on Wednesday and now face mandatory life sentences imprisonment. .

Speaking outside court, Brianna's mother Esther Ghey said her daughter's killers have shown “no remorse” and as a result she has lost any sympathy she previously felt for them.

Also outside court, Detective Chief Inspector Mike Evans, head of crime at Cheshire Police, described the young killers as “two very deranged people” who had a “thirst to kill”.

The trial heard the pair had a fascination for violence, torture and murder and had planned Brianna's murder for weeks, as described in a handwritten murder plan and phone messages found by detectives.

Brianna Ghey's parents testify after two teenagers were found guilty of murder

The parents of Brianna Ghey made emotional statements after two teenagers, known only as Girl X and Boy Y, were found guilty of murdering the 16-year-old at Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday 20 December. “Brianna was larger than life. She was funny, witty and fearless. We miss Brianna so much and our home feels so empty without her,” said Esther Ghey. Ms Ghey said she initially felt sympathy for the defendants before the trial until they had shown “not an ounce of remorse”. “I look into her eyes and they shine again. And I know she was a beautiful girl to be proud of. I hate how her life was brutally taken away and she was denied the life she wanted to live,” said Brianna's father, Peter Spooner.

The court heard that teenager X told Y via WhatsApp that she was “obsessed” with Brianna and police would find a crumpled handwritten plan to kill her on X's bedroom floor.

Searching X's home after her arrest, officers found the note titled “Saturday, February 11, 2023. Victim: Brianna Ghey,” with the word “plan” written underneath and a smiley face and heart shape in the upper right. angle.

The note read: “Know [boy Y] on wooden poles 1 p.m. Walk to library, bus stop. Wait until Brianna gets off the bus and then the 3 of us walk to Linear Park. Go to the pipe/tunnel area. I say code word to [boy Y]. He stabs her in the back like I stab her in the stomach. [Boy Y] drags the body into the area. We both cover the area with logs etc.'

Prosecutor says ‘the planning, violence and age of the killers are beyond belief'

A prosecutor called Brianna Ghey's murder “one of the saddest cases I've ever dealt with.”

Deputy Crown Attorney Ursula Doyle, of CPS Mersey-Cheshire, said: “This was one of the most harrowing cases I have ever dealt with. The planning, violence and age of the killers is beyond belief.

“Brianna Ghey was attacked and stabbed 28 times in broad daylight in a public park.

“Girl X and boy Y seem to have had a deadly influence on each other and acted out their dark fantasies of murder. The extensive messages between the two, planning and plotting to kill people, talking about murder, torture and cruelty, were hard to read.

“The messages provided a terrifying picture into the minds of the two defendants – but also revealed the detailed planning of their attack and subsequent attempts to cover it up.”
