The distinctive deep purple color is no coincidence. Nestled in the high-altitude city of Nyingchi, the apples are exposed to intense ultraviolet light during the day, while the temperature fluctuations between warm days and cool nights contribute to their unique appearance.

Unlike common apple trees, which only take two to three years to mature, the black diamond apple requires patience. It requires a long period of eight years to reach maturity, coupled with the challenges presented by the steep mountains in which it thrives.
Apples are generally red, green and yellow, but apparently when the right geographical conditions are met they can also turn dark purple, almost black.
